The Story Behind Kalani

I was in Hawaii because I had booked a weaving workshop with a local.

I was so excited.

Then... the weather changed.

And I don't mean a little rain.

It was one of those proper tropical island downpours where the rain comes down so hard you can barely see in front of you.

The workshop had to be cancelled.

I remember thinking,

"Well... I guess that's not happening today."

Then my teacher came over with the biggest smile.

Her name was Kalani.

Instead of saying goodbye, she asked if I'd like to come back to her house instead.

So I did.

We spent the afternoon sitting under a little pagoda, listening to the rain while we talked about weaving, Hawaii, travelling and life.

A little while later, her son came home carrying a freshly baked banana pie.

Without even asking, he cut us all a slice.

I still remember sitting there thinking...

"These people don't even know me."

But somehow that didn't matter.

They welcomed me into their home, shared their food, shared their stories and made me feel completely comfortable.

It was such a simple afternoon.

But I think about it a lot.

Maybe because it reminded me of the stories you hear from years ago, when neighbours helped neighbours, people trusted each other a little more and kindness wasn't something you expected back.

I'd like to believe people like that still exist.

Because I really think they do.

Sometimes all it takes is one person to remind you.

That's why this design is called Kalani.

KALANI - The Black colourway reminds me of that wild tropical rainstorm that unexpectedly brought us together. The bright flowers and butterflies remind me of Hawaii afterwards, when everything looked fresh, colourful and full of life again.

KALANI BLUE - The Blue colourway reminds me of the quieter side of Hawaii. The ocean, the open sky and that peaceful feeling that makes you want to stay just a little longer.

I hope every time you use Kalani, it reminds you that there are still people with hearts of gold out there.

And if you ever get the chance to be one of those people for someone else...

I hope you take it.

With love,

Simona ♡
