Best Picnic Spots in Melbourne and surroundings

7/22/20252 min read

Sometimes, all you need is a nice day, good food, and somewhere pretty to roll out a rug. Whether you’re catching up with a friend, taking your dog for a chilled afternoon, or just want some quiet time outdoors, Victoria has so many great picnic spots to explore.

Here are a few of my favourite spots tested and loved, with your favourite rug in mind.

1. Fitzroy Gardens – Melbourne

Right in the middle of the city, but it doesn’t feel like it. With big old trees, quiet corners, and that peaceful garden feel, this one’s perfect for a casual lunch break or quick catch up. Grab a coffee, pack some pastries, and bring a good book.

📍 East Melbourne | Dog-friendly

2. Alfred Nicholas Gardens – Sherbrooke

This place is honestly stunning. Especially in autumn, think golden leaves, walking trails, and a little lake. It’s not the spot for loud music or big groups, but ideal if you want a peaceful escape. Bring a warm drink, something sweet, and your coziest rug.

📍 Dandenong Ranges | No dogs

3. Werribee Park – Werribee

Huge lawns, rose gardens, and a castle style mansion in the background. You can’t go wrong here. There’s plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a slow afternoon. Easy to get to from Melbourne too, if you’re up for a little drive.

📍 Werribee South | Dog-friendly on lead

4. Hanging Rock – Macedon Ranges

More of a half day adventure. After a walk up Hanging Rock (it’s not too hard), come back down and set up your picnic on the open grass nearby. It’s quiet, breezy, and surrounded by bushland. Perfect spot if you want a bit of space and fresh air. I actually spotted a wild echidna here once! Keep your eyes open, you might be lucky enough to see one too 🦔

📍 Woodend | Dog-friendly

5. Daylesford Lake – Daylesford

Lakeside, relaxed, and just a really nice vibe. You can grab some local cheese, bread, or pastries from town and find a shady spot by the water. It’s a great excuse for a little weekend road trip.

📍 Daylesford | Family-friendly

What to pack?
