The Story Behind Mahina

A little longer than a product description, but this story is the reason Mahina exists.

I designed Mahina after a holiday in New Zealand's South Island.

While I was exploring, I stopped to ask a lady for directions. We ended up chatting for a little while, and when she mentioned she was a local, I asked if she knew where I could buy a genuine piece of jade.

She smiled and said something that has stayed with me ever since.

"Pounamu isn't something you go looking for. It's something that finds you."

She explained that if you're lucky enough to find jade, it's believed to have found you for a reason.

I thanked her and continued my day, not thinking too much about it.

Later that afternoon, I stopped at a place I can't even remember the name of.

It wasn't somewhere I had planned to visit. I just saw the view and felt like stopping.

A crystal clear river flowed into the ocean. The black sand stretched along the shore, with lush green mountains in the distance. It was one of those places that made me want to stay a little longer.

I went for a walk along the beach and, just as I was about to leave, something caught my eye.

A dark stone was sitting half buried in the sand.

I picked it up, rinsed it in the water...

It was jade!!

I just stood there.

All I could think about were the words that lady had shared with me earlier that day.

Even writing this now gives me goosebumps.

Maybe some things really aren't meant to be searched for.

Maybe they're meant to find us.

That's the story behind Mahina.

Every part of Mahina tells a piece of that story. The flowing lines were inspired by the river meeting the ocean, the soft jade greens by the piece of jade that unexpectedly found me, and the elegant peacock inspired patterns are a reminder that even life's unexpected moments can lead us somewhere beautiful.

Every time I unfold a Mahina rug, I'm reminded to slow down, trust life's timing and appreciate the unexpected moments that often become the ones we remember forever.

I hope Mahina reminds you to enjoy the journey, trust where life is taking you and believe that what's meant for you will always find its way.
