When we were in New Zealand’s South Island, we stumbled upon a place where the river met the ocean, peaceful and calm. The water was clear and cool, and the black sand stretched before us, with lush green mountains rising behind. After a long walk, as we were about to leave, something caught my eye, a dark rock half-buried in the sand. We rinsed it in the ocean, and that’s when we realised it was jade.
A Māori woman who was there explained something beautiful to us, that Pounamu, or jade, isn’t something you look for. It’s something that finds you. If you happen to come across it, it’s a sign. A moment that feels like the earth is guiding you, connecting you to something bigger, reminding you that you’re exactly where you need to be.
This rug is a reminder of that moment. The flowing shapes in the design reflect the way the river gently moves, always on its way to something greater.
